Technical Branch
Northrop Grumman Ship Systems Full Service Operations maintains an engineering organization encompassing naval architecture, electrical combat systems, structures, and marine engineering departments. It consists of technical and design disciplines capable of all levels of design specializing in ship modernization and conversions. We are experienced in the design and engineering support of many US and foreign navy ship classes, as well as commercial ships and drilling rigs. Our technical and design branches are co-located at our Pascagoula home office to promote the continual dialogue necessary for effective design coordination.
Professional Engineers are available to lead any maritime engineering project. Degreed Mechanical, Civil, Electrical Engineers and Naval Architects provide support. Our staff of Engineering Specialists offer vast experience and innovative designs pertaining to shipboard combat systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, propulsion, piping distributed systems, hydraulics, and electric power generation and distribution systems.
Distributive System Design and Shipboard Integration
Our engineers accomplish all calculations, analyses and material/component selections necessary to produce efficient and safe shipboard distributive systems. Our capabilities include expertise in both the installation of stand-alone systems and modifications to expand the capability of existing piping, ventilation, and electrical systems. Full Service Operations engineering tools are state-of-the-art and we perform a significant amount of our real time system modeling utilizing SIMSMART for piping and vent system designs.
Structural Design and Scantling Development
We have full capability to design and optimize structural arrangement schemes and scantlings for whole-ship and local ship areas. Again, our engineering tools are modern computer based and include finite element modeling (FEM) using the NASTRAN/PATRAN software suite for modeling and analysis. In addition, local design modeling is accomplished with ALGOL software.
Ship Damage Assessments
Full Service Operations has been engaged to assess grounding, collision, and battle damages. These assessments covered the full range of operator concerns for ship and personnel safety. We can quickly assess residual hull girder strength, damaged stability and devise towing and recovery plans. HecSalv software is used in damage evaluations to aid speed and accuracy. Engineering personnel are available on an immediate-basis to any ship operator worldwide.
Stability Analyses
Full Service Operations Naval Architects have maintained stability oversight of two classes of U.S. Navy ships for over twenty years. This has included all routine deadweight surveys and inclining experiments, as well as post modernization stability checks. We have fully integrated capability to keep accurate sight on weight and stability during ship modification design whether carried out in-house or by others. Our capabilities extend to all ship classes and stability criteria (USN, foreign military and all commercial regulatory bodies). We can provide analyses for all loading conditions in damage and intact cases sought by any criteria.
Design Branch
Our Design Branch is also multi-disciplined and produces detailed drawings for ship repair and modification. Full Service Operations designers are organized along traditional specialties of Arrangements, Marine (piping and vent), Structures, and Electrical/Electronics. In addition to drawings, they prepare all material lists and work instructions to install, modify, or repair ship systems quickly and economically. We have designed major structural, auxiliary, and electrical modifications for U.S. and foreign navies and commercial interests. We are particularly experienced in current designs to comply with environmental regulations and labor saving automation. Our design branch uses the modern computer aided design tool-sets of Dimension III, CATIA, and Intergraph's ISDP software for three-dimensional designs and interference checking. We also use AutoCAD -14 or 2000 for drafting and 3D developments Modeling. Design can also provide local On-Site Design Representatives (OSDR) to provide on ship drawing interpretation which eliminates errors and rework thus reducing costs for growth.
Arrangements Development
Full Service Operations Designers are well experienced in all facets of shipboard space arrangements. We integrate headroom and maintenance space with operator ergonomics/safety considerations in-line during all arrangement developments. We have contemporary experience in machinery, food service, cargo, and habitability spaces as well as complex weapon control and launcher facilities.
Detailed Drawings and Work Instructions
Full Service Operations designers produce drawings for all ship systems and installations. We have electronic access to a wide range of U.S. Navy drawings via JEDMICS. This allows preliminary arrangements and service routing designs to be roughed out prior to verification shipchecks. Preliminary material listings for these early layouts allow accurate cost estimating to keep pace with design progress, permitting us to offer workable design-to-cost approaches. Our drawing products include all plans, sections, and elevations necessary for customer approval, material ordering, installation and inspection.
Manufacturing Aids
Full Service Operations designers can produce pre-fabrication shop sketches or computer aided manufacturing (CAM) electronic instructions for Structural parts, Sheet metal flat patterns, Pipe cutting and bending, and Cable circuit cutting and routing instructions customized to fit into the customer's production facility. In addition to engineering instructions, we can deliver prefabricated parts and assemblies in conjunction with the Northrop Grumman shipyards.
Material List Preparation and Ordering
Full Service Operations continues the engineering material process by collecting material descriptions from the complete ship project and packaging like items for economical procurement. Further, we can provide reliable supplier ordering data to assure proper material readiness for the installation. Finally, we have complete facilities to provide all materials needed to accomplish the complete installation. This includes identification, procurement, kitting (marking and packaging work group), and delivery to the ship work site.
Electronic Access
The Full Service Operations actively maintains a secure website for full customer access to their technical information. This website eliminates the need for data transmittals and non-secure emailing of sensitive customer technical data.
