Northrop Grumman's Ship Systems sector (NGSS), headquartered in Pascagoula, Mississippi, includes primary operations in Pascagoula, Miss., New Orleans, La., Gulfport, Miss., and Tallulah, La., as well as in fleet support offices in the U.S. and Japan. NGSS, which currently employs more than 17,000 shipbuilding professionals, primarily in Mississippi and Louisiana, is one of the nation's leading full service systems companies for the design, engineering, construction, and life cycle support of major surface ships for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and international navies, and for commercial vessels of all types.
NGSS Ingalls Operations Headquartered in Pascagoula, Mississippi, is the sole builder of the Navy / Marine Corps Team's WASP (LHD 1) Class of large-deck multipurpose amphibious assault ships, which operate as the centerpiece of an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). Ingalls is one of two builders of the Navy's ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) Class of Aegis guided missile destroyers, which provide primary antiair protection for the fleet.
NGSS Avondale Operations in New Orleans and Tallulah, Louisiana, and Gulfport, Mississippi, is the prime contractor for the Navy / Marine Corps Team's SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17) Class of amphibious assault ships. Avondale is also building seven T-AKR Ro/Ro Sealift ships for the U.S. Navy, with five delivered and two currently under construction. These Sealift ships are 950 feet long, making them second in size only to aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy's fleet. Avondale is also building five double-hull oil tankers (the first to be built in the U.S.), for POLAR Tankers. These giant ships are the world's most environmentally safe product tankers.
NGSS Full Service Operations is a business unit of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems. NGSS-FSO is headquartered in Pascagoula, Mississippi adjacent to its parent shipyard now also a part of Northrop Grumman. NGSS-FSO actually began operation as an element of Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1980 when Ingalls was awarded the DD963 Planning Yard Contract. The planning effort grew steadily through the years as Ingalls scope expanded to keep pace with the class modernization plan. CG47 Class planning was added in 1990 bringing a total of sixty-three ships under Ingalls planning activity.
