Ingalls awarded $1.5 million for first phase of T-ADC(X) cargo ship program

August 27, 1999 – The U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded a $1.5 million study contract to Ingalls Shipbuilding for the first phase of the Navy’s new T-ADC (X) Program.

The Ingalls contract is among four awarded to competing shipyards for Phase I. Litton Avondale Industries in New Orleans, La., Halter Marine Group in Gulfport, Miss., and National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., in San Diego, Ca., are the other shipyards vying for work.

The T-ADC (X) is a new auxiliary dry cargo class of combat logistics force ships intended to replace the U.S. Navy’s dry stores and ammunition ships now approaching the end of their intended service lives. The Navy plans to build 12 auxiliary dry cargo ships over the next six years, and the total value of this program is over $5 billion.

"We are pleased that both elements of Litton Ship Systems, Avondale Industries and Ingalls Shipbuilding, have been awarded separate $1.5 million study contracts in the U.S. Navy’s T-ADC(X) Program," said Jerry St. Pe’, Chief Operating Officer of Litton Ship Systems. "Avondale and Ingalls submitted separate proposals for the Phase I study contracts. The two shipyards will now be conducting these studies independently, with separate, individual teams."

During Phase I, the focus will be on the development of a cargo handling system that yields improvements in the efficiency of operations and reliability of the system components. The Detailed Design and Construction contract (Phase II) will be awarded for construction of 12 ships in at least two shipyards. Contract award for Phase II is expected in late 2000.
