ROOSEVELT (DDG 80) UNDERWAY - The 13th Aegis guided missile destroyer built for the U.S. Navy by Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, ROOSEVELT (DDG 80), sailed into the Gulf of Mexico February 29-March 1, 2000, for initial predelivery sea trials. DDG 80 is the first Ingalls-built Flight IIA Aegis destroyer. The highlight of this major upgrade program is the addition of an aircraft hangar that will accommodate two SH-60B helicopters. Ingalls was responsible for the design of the new hangar, and its associated compartments, as well as for incorporating the hangar into the total ship design program. ROOSEVELT will be delivered to the Navy by Ingalls in June and will be commissioned October 14, 2000, at Mayport, Florida. INGALLS SHIPBUILDING PHOTO
